The motto ‘NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US’ relies on the principle of participation, and it has been used by Disabled Peoples Organisations throughout the years as part of the global movement to achieve the full participation and equalization of opportunities for, by and with persons with disabilities.
In line with this, HILA had approached a number of stakeholders and formed a committee made up of persons with disabilities and parents of persons with disabilities in order to move forward together and to discuss, analyze and share what the visions are in order to achieve one common goal. The aim of this Committee is a participative one, where everyone is contributing towards advocacy, the introduction of new services and the best way to achieve the best interests of persons with disabilities.
This committee is made up of persons who have extensive knowledge and experience on this sector and also act as advocates and activists for disabled persons.
One of the first agenda points discussed during these meetings was the identity of this new entity as it was important to define its purpose. After several discussions the decision fell on HILA, a name which everybody liked and which expressed positivity and purpose. HILA in English is translated to Ability, and to re-enforce this brand we decided to couple a tagline with it, using HILA’s initials:

How was the logo created?
One of the members of the Consultative Committee, Mr. Clifford Portelli, offered to design the logo himself, and he came up with this clean yet catching design. The colors have also been carefully chosen as they also have a meaning behind them.
The color magenta is one of universal harmony and emotional balance. It is spiritual yet practical, encouraging common sense and a balanced outlook on life. It helps to create harmony and balance in every aspect of life: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and is also an instrument of change and transformation: it helps to release old emotional patterns that prevent personal and spiritual development and aids us in moving forward.
The color orange radiates warmth and happiness. Orange offers emotional strength in difficult times – it is optimistic and uplifting, rejuvenating the spirit. With its enthusiasm for life, the color orange inspires physical confidence and independence.
This is the meaning behind the branding of HILA – for it to be not only a name and a tagline but that, through its logo and colors, it portrays the ideology behind the work HILA is doing and give confidence and positivity on a future with a difference.
